The program is named the Steven Roth Memorial Fund in honor of Steven Roth, son of MMA past president (1967‑69) Paul Roth and Caroll Roth. Steve Roth was a first year medical student at Ohio State University when he died of cancer in December, 1990. Steve was a committed Christian whose plans for service through medicine were ended by his untimely death. Recipients of the Steven Roth Program will be known as receiving the Steven Roth Program Award.

Steven James Roth was born September 3, 1965 in Holmes County Ohio to Paul and Caroll Roth. He grew up in the Killbuck community and graduated from Central Christian High School at Kidron, Ohio in 1983.

Steve attended Eastern Mennonite College for four years with a one‑year break to work in Austria and France. After graduation from EMC in 1988 he served one year in voluntary service at the Columbia Road Health Services, a clinic for low or no income Hispanic people, in Washington, DC. While serving at Columbia Road Health Services Steve developed a real love for and a desire to serve the population of people often overlooked by the main stream health care system.

His plans after medical school were to serve in some form of mission practice overseas or in this country. In the fall of 1989 he entered The Ohio State University, College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio. He was active in and attended Neil Avenue Mennonite Church. In February 1990 Steve was diagnosed with undifferentiated adeno‑carcinoma and died December 22, 1990.

The Need/Opportunity http://www.mennmed.org/Steven_Roth_Memorial:CB1=need.html@CB2 The Need/Opportunity

Educational debt has become an ever-larger fact-of‑life for physicians and dentists emerging from their professional training programs. The size of their debt is influencing students and residents in their choice of specialty and the geographic location of practice. Debt is also a deterrent to those who might wish to volunteer their services for several years following residency to mission boards, service agencies (especially Mennonite Central Committee) or other Christian medical outreach enterprises. A number of our members have given such periods of service in past years, especially when the service was an alternative to the military draft. Those who have given such voluntary service generally affirm the experience very highly and regard it as mutually beneficial to the church's outreach and the individual's spiritual growth. Fewer have volunteered in recent years; educational debt is one factor.

Growing out of the experience of past volunteers, Mennonite Medical Association has always paid deliberate attention to overseas mission and service needs and opportunities. Our Student Elective Term program is one of the outgrowths of that interest. SET is directed toward students or residents interested in an overseas elective during their training years. The Steven Roth Fund further extends MMA's support to those emerging from completion of their residency programs. The Fund is designed to pay the interest on educational debt for a qualified MMA member candidate for medical voluntary service during the years of such continuous service. In this way MMA both encourages and enables medical voluntary service. The program has already generated the interest and support of the MMA membership in much the same way that the SET program has.  Members are encouraged to contribute to this and the other funds listed, in amounts above annual dues.

Some Assumptions and Conditions http://www.mennmed.org/Steven_Roth_Memorial:CB1=assumptions.html@CB2 Some Assumptions and Conditions

  • The funds would be collected in and disbursed from our Mobilization for Mission account.
  • The candidate has no other means of achieving interest deferment during his/her period of service.
  • The interest payments are in the form of grants, not loans.
  • The candidate is a member of Mennonite Medical Association.
  • The candidate is professionally qualified to fill the service position.
  • The candidate has been accepted for service by the sponsoring agency.
  • The candidate is active in and recommended by the local Christian congregation or fellowship of which she/ he is a part.
The MMA financial commitment is renewable for the 2‑5 years of the volunteer's commitment. i.e. we would not withdraw "midstream".
If Mobilization for Mission funds permits, we would consider more than one candidate at a time. Until that time, the grant would be offered to one individual on a competitive basis.
